”On June 5, 2022, while riding in broad daylight on a designated bike route, I encountered a driver who suddenly turned left into my path at an intersection, leaving me no time to react. I struck his truck, suffering severe shoulder and knee injuries that required surgeries and a long, painful recovery. This followed a similar incident in 2019, when a driver behind me failed to see me riding in the bike lane in broad daylight, causing another serious crash.
Both preventable crashes were entirely avoidable. In both instances, I was visible, obeying all laws, and riding where I was supposed to be. Yet, in both cases, the drivers failed to see me. These collisions were not “accidents.” They were preventable errors. Technologies like V2X, which enables cars and bikes to communicate, could have prevented both of these crashes. This system is essential to reducing the number of collisions caused by driver error—like the ones I endured.”
”My brother was killed by a pickup truck driver on the wrong side of the road. The Alameda County DA had irrefutable evidence, but with no eyewitnesses and the assumption that jurors are drivers, the DA plea bargained the case to Misdemeanor Manslaughter with a $100 fine and 100 hours of community service.
The joy of cycling is indisputable, but as cyclists our greatest risk is that driver and rider can’t see one another. A V2X ecosystem that let’s drivers see riders and vice versa seems as inconceivable as driverless cars were ten years ago. However, the V2X ecosystem is available and now it is a question of how quickly automotive, bicycle and municipal groups can collaborate to enhance rider safety.”
”On Oct 21, 2021, while cycling in broad daylight on a designated bike lane in Golden, Colorado, I was struck from behind by a distracted driver who drifted out of her lane. Despite following all traffic laws, wearing reflective gear, and using daytime running lights, I was nearly killed. The crash left me with 11 broken bones, a concussion, a collapsed lung, and internal bleeding. After days in the ICU and months of recovery, I’m still dealing with life-altering pain. This preventable collision underscores the critical need for technologies that enable communication between cars and bikes, reducing crashes and saving lives.”

“The roadmap to help save lives is clear and Audi’s commitment to deploying C-V2X connectivity is an investment in the future of our transportation ecosystem. Our participation in the Coalition for Cyclist Safety will help accelerate that objective.”
“V2X is another important contribution to safer cycling, since it could give cyclists digital visibility for other road users. However, this cannot be achieved by one company alone – it requires the cooperation of various players working on the topic across the board so that in the future no road user is excluded from the benefits V2X can provide. We are happy to be one of the founders and to partner on this important initiative.”
