About the Coalition

The Coalition for Cyclist Safety is a “safer roads for all road users” initiative that unites leaders and stakeholders from various sectors, including telecommunications, automotive, V2X technology, the bicycle industry, research institutes, and cyclist safety advocacies. It aims to integrate bicycles into a future V2X communication ecosystem, making them digitally visible to other road users and reducing accidents.

Established in response to the USDOT’s call for comprehensive strategies to improve road safety, especially for vulnerable road users, the coalition promotes the deployment of V2X technology. Their mission is to reduce traffic accidents involving cyclists by ensuring they benefit from V2X technology, addressing the common issue of cyclists being overlooked. The coalition drives V2X deployments by uniting relevant parties who can contribute and implement their products to enhance road safety, beginning in North America with expansion to Europe.

The Coalition was created to bring together leaders from diverse industries to address the urgent need for safer mobility solutions for cyclists and VRUs, aligning with Vision Zero goals.

Our members include Automotive OEMs, Bike OEMs, telecom companies, tech industry leaders, safety organizations, research institutes and cyclist safety advocacies, committed to advancing road safety by V2X-deployments. An overview of our members can be viewed here.

The Coalition for Cyclist Safety operates by fostering collaboration between its diverse members—spanning telecommunications, automotive, V2X technology, and the bicycle industry—to share insights and expertise. This collaboration drives the development and deployment of innovative V2X technologies and solutions designed to improve safety for cyclists and other Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs).

A core aspect of the Coalition’s operation is advocating for clear policies that improve safety for cyclists and Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). The Coalition and its members are committed to turning ideas into tangible actions, deploying C-V2X solutions in North America, and actively engaging in advocacy, education, and public awareness campaigns to promote cyclist safety and the benefits of V2X technology. Through these collaborative efforts, the Coalition aims to make a measurable impact on reducing road fatalities and injuries involving cyclists.

The Coalition for Cyclist Safety aims to increase the adoption of V2X technology among cyclists. These are some examples, how to achieve this:

  • Integrating bicycles into the V2X ecosystem: The coalition aims to ensure, bicycles are part of the V2X communication ecosystem right from the beginning, allowing V2X-equipped vehicles and cyclists to recognize each other, creating mutual awareness and decreasing accidents.
  • Collaboration with cycling advocates: The Coalition closely collaborates with advocates for cyclists to joiontly establish a safer cycling ecosystem.
  • Collaboration with regulators and road operators: The Coalition works with regulators and road operators across all levels of government to deploy clear policies that meet relevant infrastructure needs.
  • Deployment of V2X solutions: The Coalition drives developments, implementations, and deployments of regional relevant V2X solutions, components, and applications that facilitate road safety.
  • Promotion of V2X technology as a safety tool: The Coalition positions V2X as an effective tool to support the achievement of ambitious ‘Vision Zero’ goals, driving public V2X infrastructure deployments and promoting the inclusion of bicycles in the V2X ecosystem from day one.
  • Engagement in advocacy, education, and public awareness: The Coalition promotes cyclist safety through advocacy, education, and public engagement.

Membership & Participation

Any organization from the automotive, cycling, telecom, tech, or safety sectors can join the Coalition, provided they are committed to advancing the integration of V2X technology to create a connected ecosystem where bicycles and motorized vehicles can digitally perceive each other, thereby reducing accidents and enhancing road safety for vulnerable road users.

Simply fill out the “Join the Coalition” form on our website, and our team will contact you to discuss how your organization can contribute.

By joining the Coalition for Cyclist Safety, your organization helps advance the deployment of connected vehicle technologies (V2X) for safer mobility. An annual membership contribution of $2,300 USD will support these initiatives. Membership details, including benefits and invoicing, are discussed during onboarding to ensure participation is both impactful and accessible.

Joining the Coalition provides opportunities for cross-industry collaboration, contribute to meaningful safety initiatives and the ability to lead in advancing innovative safety solutions for cyclists and vulnerable road users.

Members are expected to actively participate in initiatives, share expertise, and support efforts to advance cyclist and VRU safety.

Technology & Innovation

V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology enables vehicles, bikes, and infrastructure to communicate in real-time. This technology enhances safety by delivering early warnings to drivers and cyclists, helping to mitigate potential collisions.
The Coalition brings together industry leaders, including telecom companies, tech innovators, Automotive OEMs, and Bike OEMs, to collaborate on the deployment of V2X technology. By facilitating partnerships, sharing expertise, and driving coordinated efforts, the Coalition ensures that V2X solutions are effectively implemented to enhance safety for cyclists and Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs).

Yes, successful V2X pilots have been conducted worldwide, demonstrating substantial contributions to reducing crashes involving VRUs.
